Art and Design

Intent

The Art and Design curriculum aims to develop creative learners and thinkers, fostering individual expression and personal responses to themes and concepts. We prioritise self-reflection, helping students feel pride and accomplishment in their work, while recognizing the therapeutic benefits of artistic practice.

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners, supporting diverse starting points. Students are encouraged to work independently, experiment with new media, and make creative decisions that develop their artistic skills and portfolios. Through structured progression, they build on foundational skills, learning what works best for their individual styles and creative intentions.

A broad range of contextual studies introduces students to the wider art community and the evolution of art over time. By studying the work of artists and designers, students explore historical, social, and cultural contexts, using analytical skills to interpret meaning, purpose, and symbolic significance.

We assess student progress through reflection, peer evaluation, and teacher feedback, ensuring that students are continually developing their technical abilities and critical thinking. Our curriculum promotes risk-taking, resilience, and confidence, preparing students for future artistic exploration and appreciation of art’s role in society.
